Our Own Dark Ages
A friend of mine wrote a public post recently. About how in the Middle Ages Jesuits were burning people for their new ideas and witches were hunted and killed. The post has ended with how lucky we are that those dark ages are over.
Is there anything wrong with what he wrote? I think there is. The Middle Ages ended in 1492. Jesuits were established in 1540. The majority of large witch trials took place in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Those terrible things my friend wrote about had happened in the early modern era, not in that so-called dark one.
Poor people of the Middle Ages. They cannot defend themselves when we use them so that we look better in our own eyes. I wonder what future generations will say about our “dark ages”.
