Nelson Bay Trip

A couple of snapshots from my GoPro footage from our recent trip to Nelson Bay, NSW, Australia. The place is considered to be the best shore diving in the whole New South Wales. The tidal flow through the harbor is strong which requires a certain level of planning. Because of that we could do only one dive per day. Another one would be a night dive and we were too lazy. Even though we stayed only about a 5 min. walk from the best spot. The visibility was quite limited. My understanding was even the locals thought in was quite bad. Water temperature was similar to what we have in New Zealand, actually I believe it was a bit colder.

That’s basically all what we can complain about:) Everything else was great. It was an amazing mix of fauna and flora. There were big schools of fish there, wobbegong (carpet) sharks were everywhere, we saw plenty of rays, big scorpionfish and some moray eels too. But above all the area is a paradise for macro life lovers. The small walls and reefs in 9-12 m and then the slope further down are covered with beautiful and colorful invertebrate life. That’s the place where the macro life can be found.

Pripravil som niekoľko záberov z GoPro videa, ktore som točil počas nášho nedávneho výletu do Nelson Bay v Austrálii. Ten druhý by vychádzal na noc a my sme boli dosť leniví.

Miesto má nádhernú zmes flóry a fauny.

Corals with white polyps and tunicate species unknown to us. Note the ‘pencil’ sea urchin hiding under the rock.

Banded coral shrimp in front of its cave … it’s got its elegance indeed. The visibility at that particular spot was about 1 m at that time 🙁

I believe this is a nurse shark partially hidden in sea weeds.

Colorful sponge gardens were everywhere.

Beautiful purple and pink sea tulips (I call them ‘clubs’).

Dense schools of juvenile fish in the shallows were completely destroying visibility.

Big scorpionfish well camouflaged among sea weeds … especially in murky water.

Some sort of trigger fish on the sandy slope in about 15 m.

Beautiful yellow and orange sea tulips.

Wobbegong (carpet) shark taking off the bottom towards the camera. We actually touched each other, but it did not care.

Wobbegong (carpet) shark resting on the rocky bottom in the shallows … depth less than 1 m.
